Stop Optimizing. Start Finishing.

System-building is the most respectable form of procrastination we know.

If you've rebuilt your task system twice this quarter and shipped nothing, the system was never the constraint.

A cleared desk with a single finished notebook

Rebuilding your task system feels like work, produces visible artifacts, and costs nothing in vulnerability. That is exactly what makes it dangerous.

A useful test: if you have reorganised your tools more than twice this quarter without shipping anything, the tools are not the constraint.

Impose a finishing quota instead. One thing shipped per week, however small, before any system change is permitted. Optimisation becomes a reward rather than a refuge.

Practical Value

Impose a finishing quota

  1. 01Name the one thing you'll ship this week — small is fine, finished is not optional.
  2. 02Freeze all tool changes until it's out.
  3. 03Log shipped items in one visible list; review it monthly instead of your setup.
